Dr. Sara Pizano received her master’s degree from Columbia University in 1988 followed by her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Cornell University in 1994. In 1995 she completed a rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, with an annual caseload of 60,000 pets.

From 1995 to 1997, Dr. Pizano was an associate veterinarian at North Shore Animal League where the full-service specialty hospital served shelter pets and adopted pets with medical conditions for life. In 2000, Dr. Pizano helped establish a high-volume, low-cost full service veterinary clinic in South Florida and continues to do per diem veterinary work in several clinics.

Dr. Pizano has dedicated her career to sheltering, both private and public and since 2013 has done over 100 community and shelter assessments helping organizations reach their full life-saving potential. Her work ending euthanasia for space in shelters has always started with foundational issues around public policy and access to care that prevents pets from entering a shelter in the first place.

Dr. Pizano is a passionate advocate for access to care for all pets and joins Open Door Veterinary Consulting as a national trainer both in Asheville, North Carolina and on-site with individual clients.

Dr. Pizano is the author of The Best Practice Playbook for Animal Shelters that has sold over 2,000 copies in the first year of publication and is a frequent speaker on the national circuit.
